International coconut summit to be held in Kochi

To take stock of the developments in the sector

KOCHI: International coconut summit will be organised in Kochi in May next year. The summit will take stock of the developments in the sector since the first summit was conducted in Kochi in 2003, according to Swadeshi Nalikera Mission and Peekay Tree Crops Development Foundation, the organisers. There will be seminars and a trade fair as part of the event.

While there was a marginal increase in the area devoted to the crop in India since 2000, the production failed to show a corresponding change, according to P.K. Thampan and C.A. Sajeevan, president and secretary of the Swadeshi Nalikera Mission. In a statement, they said the area under coconut cultivation in India in 2004 was 1933 hectare as against 1840 hectare in 2000. The production was 12,459 million nuts in 2004 while it was 12,957 million nuts in 2000.

The only coconut product exported in significant volume is coir. The stability of coconut-based economies of major producing countries has been threatened due to new policies.

The total export of coconut products from India was to the tune of $109 million.

Coconut sustains the livelihood of millions of small and marginal farmers spread over 93 countries in the world.

The area devoted to its cultivation in 2004 was 12.48 million hectares with an output of 57,943.68 million nuts. The value of coconut products exported from these countries in 2004 stood at $1,690 million.
