Taiwan Quick Take: Keelung mayor gets seven

Keelung Mayor Hsu Tsai-li (許財利) was sentenced to seven years in prison and deprived of his civil rights for eight years yesterday for corruption involving a land deal. Hsu, a Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) member who was re-elected last year, was indicted on charges of corruption by the Keelung District Prosecutors' Office in May. The prosecutors said in the indictment that Hsu's decision to buy a piece of land for the city's bus park was made for his own personal benefit. The KMT announced it would revoke Hsu's party membership. KMT Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), who campaigned for Hsu last year, expressed his regret at the ruling and apologized to Keelung residents for endorsing the mayor. "But he was not indicted when we were campaigning for him last year," he added yesterday. Ma had refused to revoke Hsu's membership, arguing that being indicted did not amount to guilt.
