8 named for Heritage Calypso Monarch

Seven time Calypso Monarch Calypso Prince, 1983 Tobago Monarch Joe Tempo, 2005 Tobago Monarch Leslie-Ann Ellis and two time Tobago Road March winner Ware are among eight finalists chosen for the 2006 Tobago Heritage Calypso Monarch finals.

The Calypso finals will be held on July 25 at the Heritage Village, which will be constructed at the Dwight Yorke stadium car park at Bacolet. The other four finalists are former Heritage Monarch Kelvin 'Django' George, King Yodel, Sherwin Cunningham and Gary B. Reserve is Wellington Job. The eight were selected at the auditions on Saturday at the Culture Division office on Wilson Road, Scarborough.

Chief Judge and musicologist Vernella Alleyne-Toppin gave a graphic explanation to the calypsonians who turned out for the auditions about what the judges were looking for in the compositions.

Collis Hazel, a Festivals Committee member who has been successfully organising the Windward Queen show and Carnival has been appointed by the Festivals Committee to coordinate the Heritage Calypso contest in collaboration with TUCO Tobago. Hazel who is trained in events management announced the prize structure for the contest, which includes a $10,000 first prize. The eight finalists will face reigning Heritage Monarch Ringo, in the finals.
