The sailor killed in a car wreck last weekend in Manama, Bahrain, has been
identified as Petty Officer 3rd Class Roger Alan Napper, Jr., 30, a
master-at-arms with Mobile Security Squadron Three Detachment Bahrain.
Napper died at the scene of the 1:25 a.m. single-vehicle accident Oct. 7 on
the Al Fatih highway. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command officials said Thursday
a sailor who was a passenger in the car is still recovering from injuries
sustained in the crash.
Napper is from Greensburg, Pa. A memorial service is planned for Monday at
Naval Support Activity Bahrain. The cause of the accident is still under
investigation.
Force-protection drill could slow base entry
GRAFENWÖHR, Germany — People at Vilseck, Grafenwöhr and Hohenfels could
experience delays entering the bases to visit the commissary and post exchange
Saturday because of a force-protection exercise, U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwöhr
public affairs officer Nick D’Amario said Thursday.
Charging Boar 2006 is a U.S. Army Europe-mandated exercise designed to test
the garrison’s ability to deal with scenarios such as a terrorist attack,
chemical spill, fire or other major incident, “anything that would require the
installation to use its responders and possibly require host-nation support,” he
said.
The exercise will involve German police, firefighters and medical personnel.
Because the scenario for the exercise is a secret, it is not clear which
installations will be affected, although officials expect action to be
concentrated at Vilseck, D’Amario said.
Gricignano food court opens
NAPLES, Italy — After years of delays, the Food Court opens for business
Saturday at the U.S. Navy support site housing complex at Gricignano. The dining
area will feature three popular eateries: Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken and
A&W Root Beer.
Saturday’s kickoff will be a “soft opening,” meaning it’ll be open for
business but with no fanfare, such as a ribbon-cutting, prize giveaways or
contests, base officials said.
The Food Court opening is among several anticipated quality-of-life features
residents here have longed for. The oft-delayed Navy Exchange and commissary
complex opened in May 2005 after a nearly four-year delay, held up by union
problems and Roman ruins found in the site.
The Food Court is near the movie theater end of the complex, which opens at
10 a.m.
