State Sen. Terry Link says he is a candidate to replace Illinois Senate President Emil Jones, who plans to step down at the end of his term in November. "Without a doubt, I'm definitely a candidate," Link, D-30th, of Waukegan said Monday. Link is majority caucus chairman in the Senate and serves as the Lake County Democratic Party chairman. Link won't be the only name in the running for the Senate presidency, however.

The August Democratic Convention was front and center in the minds of many, but a month before that, on a quiet stretch of Halsted Street in what was left of the once-bustling Greektown, Chris Liakouras celebrated his birthday by opening a restaurant with his brother. They named it Parthenon.

North Shore group aids Israel's 'Red Cross'
Devastating rocket attacks, shelling, and mortar rounds are a daily threat to people who live in places like Sderot, a town in Israel situated less than a mile from the Gaza border. "The people have 15 to 20 seconds to get to some sort of shelter when the sirens go off," said Sandy Rosen of Northbrook, the Midwest Region director for American Friends of Magen David Adom.

Hollywood is hell
War is hell, but it's also extremely funny in "Tropic Thunder," a deeply strange and outrageously violent blend of Hollywood satire and war-movie parody that makes the madness surrounding the filming of "Apocalypse Now" look restrained by comparison.
